With Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne resigning, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo finds himself weakened. The two men have in fact been accomplices for around fifteen years both within OpenVLD and the federal government.
So when Alexander de Croo ran and won the presidency of the VLD in 2009, Vincent Van Quickenborne supported him. When Alexander De Croo brought down the Leterme government in April 2010, on the issue of the future of the Brussels-Hal-Vilvoorde district, Vincent Van Quickenborne was at his side, explaining that the VLD had “pulled the plug”. And when Alexander de Croo becomes Prime Minister, the strong man of the VLD at his side as Deputy Prime Minister is still Vincent Van Quickenborne who also assumes the key portfolio of justice.
For Alexander de Croo, eight months before the elections and with poor polls, this resignation is another hard blow.
The choice of Vincent Van Quickenborne, without personal fault, recalls the resignations of Johan Vande Lanotte and Stefaan De Clerck without personal fault on their part either during the escape of Marc Dutroux from the Neufchâteau courthouse in 1998 in the name of political responsibility.
The successor to Vincent Van Quickenborne as Minister of Justice will be designated during the restricted council of ministers (kern) which will be held this Saturday, October 21 followingnoon.
