SANTIAGO, Chile.– “Working under your mandate has been the greatest honor of my life.” With a sorrowful face and after the most intense weeks of his political life, Giorio Jackson – a friend, confidant and fellow traveler of Chilean President Gabriel Boric – eventually resigned from his cabinet post as Minister of Social Development.
The opposition pressure that conditioned any agreement with the government in Congress if Jackson did not step aside and that this Monday, in addition, would file a constitutional complaint against himwas the coup de grace for Boric’s right arm and one of the ideologues of the Broad Front, the left-wing coalition that governs Chile today and that is experiencing complex days due to the uncovering of a series of corruption cases.
“Today I have made the difficult decision to present my indeclinable resignation to you”said Jackson in the intervention before the press with which he formalized his departure from the administration, the same one that initially had him as Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency, in a liaison role between the Executive and Parliament, for which also garnered criticism.
“The opposition has defined politically using my presence in the cabinet as an excuse so as not to respond to the urgencies of the people and not to advance in the reforms that Chile needs. To undertake this purpose, sectors of the opposition have committed lies, insults and slander, without presenting -by the way- absolutely no evidence that links me to any crime,” added the 36-year-old politician, addressing the milestones that were blurring his figure: the theft of 23 computers and a safe from the offices of his ministry that he headed and the participation of his party, Revolución Democrática, in the scandal known as “Agreements”, which revealed millionaire transfers of State funds to foundations linked to the ruling party.

Boric, meanwhile, in the previous hours had already made an energetic defense of Jacksonwith whom he began his political career in the student movements and who he became his great friend when they both met in Congress. “What we demand is that the accusations are not made randomly. Here the accusations that are made have to be made seriously and in particular, when crimes are charged, it has to be done in a well-founded manner and before the corresponding instances,” the president said last Wednesday.

From the opposition there were reactions of conformity after Jackson’s departure. The Republican Party automatically filed the constitutional accusation that would be presented this Monday, and its main figures valued the measure. “This comes to decompress the stumbling block that it had with the Broad Front and with the corruption problems that have involved it, especially the Democratic Revolution, and that today the agenda has been taken over,” said Joanna Pérez, a parliamentarian from the Democratic party.
“We want to make it clear that we will not stop pursuing the possible administrative and criminal responsibilities of the Minister. Personally, I will go ahead and firmly in the lawsuit that we filed against him for the Democracia Viva case,” added Cristián Araya, a representative of the Republican Party.
