The Briton has repeatedly made headlines throughout his career – through success, drugs and depression.
On Saturday evening, in front of a record crowd of 94,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium, there will be a big world championship fight between scandal boxer Tyson Fury and challenger Dillian Whyte. Before the heavyweight duel between the two Britons for the WBC belt, defending champion Fury once once more knocked out one: “I have $ 150 million in the bank. I’m going to buy a huge yacht abroad,” the 2.06-meter giant proletarianly proletarianly announced that his 33rd professional fight would be his last. But as stories from his past show, the “Gipsy King” is not always so precise with his own statements.
Fight denied – world title gone
Fury celebrated what is probably his greatest victory in November 2015, when he clinched four world titles in one fell swoop in Düsseldorf with a surprising victory on points once morest boxing legend Wladimir Klitschko. Instead of defending the belts once morest the Ukrainian mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Glazkov shortly followingwards, Fury preferred to face the rematch once morest «Dr. Steelhammer». The world title of the IBF association were then withdrawn from him.
Alcohol and drug escapades
The big crash followed at the peak of his career. One of the reasons why there should never be a rematch once morest Klitschko is that Fury was found to have consumed cocaine in a doping test in 2016. A few days later, the Briton announced his resignation on Twitter following several alcohol and drug escapades. “Boxing is the saddest thing I’ve ever done. It’s a bunch of shit, »wrote the 33-year-old – only to withdraw his resignation a few hours later.
«Hope every day to finally die»
Two days later, Fury told Rolling Stone that he was suffering from depression. «I hope every day to finally die. I don’t want to wake up anymore, I don’t want to live anymore,” said the father of six. “I hope someone kills me before I do it myself.” He then voluntarily gave back his three remaining world titles. In the summer of 2017 he once more announced his resignation. A year later he returned once more.
Petition for homophobic statements
After his triumph once morest Klitschko, Fury was nominated for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award in 2015. Because the boxer had previously made homophobic and sexist statements in an interview, a petition signed by 138,000 people spoke out once morest Fury’s nomination. As a result, he denied being homophobic – and described the signatories of the petition as “wankers”. In the election, Fury finally took fourth place and apologized for his statements.
32 fights, 0 losses
The “Gipsy King” has not lost a single one of his previous 32 fights. In December 2018, however, Fury narrowly missed his first bankruptcy when Deontany Wilder sent him onto the boards twice at Staples Center in Los Angeles. But as so often in his career, the Briton fought back and saved a draw over time in the end. His performance was subsequently named Comeback of the Year by Ring Magazine. In 2020 and 2021 the duel once morest Wilder was repeated, both times Fury left the ring as the winner.
Masturbate seven times a day
Before meeting Wilder for the third time in October of last year, Fury revealed that to avoid distractions in preparation for the fight, he would not masturbate, along with beer, fast food and sex. Curious: A year earlier it sounded completely different with the 2.06 meter colossus. In February 2020, Fury revealed he masturbates seven times a day to “keep his testosterone going”.
