Yasin Hameed, a resident of Hyderabad district of Sindh province, has amassed a good collection of Pakistani films from the beginning till date, but now he is thinking of selling it due to tight hand.
Yasin Hameed, a resident of Latifabad Unit No. 12, has been associated with journalism for 35 years, but his passion has been collecting records related to the Pakistani film industry, which is why he also worked as a showbiz writer in several newspapers.
He has more than 2000 audio and video cassettes along with posters, photographs and books on this subject.
Talking to Independent Urdu, Yasin Hameed said that since 1987, he started writing on Pakistan film industry, but as he progressed and the computer era came, he realized that the record of Pakistani film industry was not available anywhere.
According to Yasin: ‘Records of Indian films were easily found, even the video of the first Indian film Harish Chandra is there, but there were no records of Pakistani films. Considering this lack, we thought to collect the existing records of Pakistani films. Then I came to this side and started collecting every record of Pakistani films.’
He says that in the city where a cinema was broken or closed, he used to reach there and buy things at expensive prices.

“Whenever the cinema was broken, we would reach there, begging the people not to sell the pictures and other items as junk. We bought huge items from them at high prices. Thus, in other cities of Sindh, including Rahim Yar Khan, Tando Muhammad Khan, Ghotki, Umarkot, where we know that such things are available, we reach and buy them.’
He added: ‘At that time there was a hobby, there was a passion, there was money and good conditions, but now there are bad conditions so I am forced to sell them for that.’
Yasin Hameed is creating a directory based on the information of all the films of the Pakistan film industry, which will have complete information of the films from Pakistan’s first film ‘Teri Yaad’ till today.
“In other countries, these things are very valuable, but here we call people who collect such things crazy, on the other hand, the government does not pay any attention.”
Yasin Hameed is now thinking of selling this rare collection due to inflation and poverty, but he says that if the government cooperates with him in this regard, he can collect more rare collections and make them part of the library.
