Residential houses in Kyiv, Ukrainian capital, shelled, 6 killed, Russians seize key town of Severo Donetsk

Ukraine situation Kyiv Ukraine

Weeks following the city of Severo Donetsk in Ukraine’s Luhansk region was bombarded by Russian artillery shells, the mayor announced on Saturday that the city had been “fully occupied” by Russian forces. The Ukrainian army said the day before that it would withdraw from the city and instead defend it in the twin cities of Lisichansk on the highlands on the opposite bank. After Russia won Severo Donetsk, it said it had taken control of most of the Luhansk region, allowing the Russian army to further advance to the wider Donbas region and move towards President Vladimir Putin’s goal of annexing Udong. Pro-Russian forces say they have evacuated more than 800 civilians from the Azot chemical plant in the city to areas under Russian control. At the same time, the Russian army fired 48 cruise missiles across Ukraine. The capital city of Kyiv and surrounding areas were also attacked by 14 missiles yesterday morning, hitting at least two residential buildings, killing one and injuring five. Mayor Klitschko said the Russian army was demonstrating at the NATO summit in Madrid, Spain, this week.

Biden: G7 bans Russian gold to force Putin to truce

U.S. President Joe Biden, who attended the G7 summit in Germany, condemned the shelling of Kyiv as atrocious and announced that G7 members would ban the import of Russian gold. Some say that the ban on oil failed to force Putin to truce, so they point to another major export of gold, which brought Russia more than 15.4 billion US dollars (regarding 120 billion Hong Kong dollars) in revenue last year.
