Residential areas hit by gunfire in Kyiv

Shots hit at least two residential areas in kyiv on Tuesday morning, according to the emergency services, injuring one person. This attack comes at a time when fighting is intensifying around the Ukrainian capital, which the Russian army is trying to encircle.

Ukrainian emergency services reported on Facebook that a strike hit a nine-story building in the northwest of the Ukrainian capital, in the Podil district.

These shots started a fire which was quickly extinguished by firefighters. A person was taken care of and hospitalized, according to the relief, which does not specify what type of ammunition was used.

The explosion blew all the windows of the building and those nearby, according to an AFP journalist on the spot. In the early morning, several people were throwing debris out of the windows from the ravaged apartments of the building.

Almost completely surrounded

In a separate statement, Ukrainian emergency services said that a shot had caused the fire in a house in the Ossokorky district, in the south-east of kyiv. This strike caused no casualties, according to this source.

At least three powerful explosions were heard by several AFP journalists from central kyiv on Tuesday morning. Fighting has intensified in recent days around kyiv, a city almost completely surrounded by Russian forces that invaded Ukraine on February 24.

More than half of the three million inhabitants have left the city since the beginning of the Russian offensive. On Monday, several deaths and injuries were reported following shelling in different parts of kyiv. Heavy fighting has been going on for several days between Russian and Ukrainian forces on the northwestern outskirts of kyiv.
