Researchers have identified a new symptom

It has been more than three years since Covid-19 turned the world upside down. Even today, the virus continues to surprise. Doctors from the British University of Leeds have recently discovered a new symptom of Covid long.

It is a form of acrocyanosis, according to the study published August 12 in the journal The Lancet. This vascular pathology results in a blue discoloration of parts of the body, in particular the fingers and the feet, explains The Independent relayed by Slate. In general, it is exposure to cold that causes such symptoms.

Communicate the symptom for better management

In some cases identified by the researchers, the temperatures are absolutely not in question. It is indeed the Covid-19 which would then cause acrocyanosis. This is in any case what was discovered on a 33-year-old patient. For six months, the latter saw his legs regularly turn purple for no apparent reason.

The 30-year-old clarified to caregivers that since contracting Covid-19, he has experienced a feeling of very heavy legs when he stands up, associated with tingling and itching… Skin rashes also appear under his arch of the foot and disappear as soon as it lengthens.

To explain the link between long Covid and acrocyanosis, British doctors rely on dysautonomia, a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. The researchers now hope to share their results with as many people as possible, so that “clinicians have the tools to treat patients appropriately” in these cases.
