Eurosatory is the international exhibition of innovations for land and air-land defense and security, held every two years in Paris Nord Villepinte. At the end of June, two researchers from the LAMIH in Valenciennes (on the Mont-Houy campus), a CNRS laboratory, Franck Lauro and Rémi Delille, presented a mannequin that can predict the danger of injuries caused by the impact of gunfire or explosions on police officers and soldiers equipped with a protective vest. This research was conducted at the request of the Ministry of the Interior who had noticed LAMIH’s skills in biomechanics. Four doctoral theses supervised by the two researchers have already been devoted to this.
Materials that reproduce the depression of the chest
In order to analyze the severity of bullet or explosive impacts, they first designed materials that reproduce as closely as possible the sinking behavior of the human thorax: gel that imitates soft tissues such as the heart, liver, muscles and resin that reconstitutes bones and cartilage. On these organs are positioned sensors, around forty in total, which measure the severity of shots and explosions : displacements, deformations, pressures, accelerations. The numerous data recorded, for example impact images with very fast cameras, make it possible to predict lesions for each organ. These data were also compared to those obtained by an American university on cadavers.
Objective: to improve protective equipment
This research proposes solutions that improve the performance of protection systems for the benefit of male soldiers or police officers. And a project has been launched for female bodies.
