Researchers discover how to generate energy from air humidity

Researchers have found a way to generate electricity from air humidity. According to what the scientists described, the novelty was found in an unusual way and was the result of chance. The authors are from the University of Massachusetts Amhers.

The main name of the team that published about what happened in article format is Professor Jun Yao. He even commented that the discovery turned out to be “unintentionally”:

To be blunt, it was an accident. Actually, we were interested in making a simple sensor for humidity in the air.

According to researchers, a student was working on a project and forgot to turn on the power. However, the device composed of a series of microscope tubes produced an electrical signal. Professor Yao explained that this function is similar to that of a battery.

The team will now work on creating a device the size of a miniature with the ability to generate something close to a microwatt, which is usually enough to light up a pixel on large LED screens. Currently, scientists are working with organic materials.

There is another team working on a similar project and recently, they managed to create devices capable of generating 1.5 volts and 10 milliamps. In this sense, the difference is due to Svitlana Lyubchyk and her twin sons (Andriy and Sergiy Lyubchyk) using another type of material, zirconium oxide.
