The “technical scientific” meeting on the rescue of the Amazon took place at the headquarters of the National University of Leticia, where both leaders met with their work teams, representatives of indigenous peoples, non-governmental organizations, the scientific community and companies.
At the meeting, the president Gustavo Petro reported to Lula da Silva regarding the need for change in Amazon conservation and emphasized the “compelling need” to give humanity a revitalized junglewhich, he said, implies changes in the development process.
The Brazilian president described the Colombian leader’s proposal as “fundamental”, following pointing out that the recovery and preservation tasks in the region “must put the people who live in the Amazon at the center.”
The objective of the meeting was to agree on a strategy that guarantees the integrity of the Amazon ecosystem, stop the action and the destructive use of the land and avoid reaching the point of no return in response to the climate crisis. This meeting also seeks to define some of the parameters that will be taken to the so-called Amazon Summit, which will be held next August in Belém de Pará, Brazil.
The Colombian president recalled that for a long time it was believed that “progress was the destruction of the tree” for the sake of industrial production. However, “reason today tells us, through science, that the entire world economic system must be transformed: that is the challenge.”
He added that, in a complex context of global warming, saving forests is synonymous with saving lives and cultures.
At the end of the meeting, the Colombian leader invited his Brazilian counterpart to reflect on the convenience of the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbons in the Amazon jungle.
“Today we are aware that the world’s forests are fundamental climatic pillars. The Amazon Basin is the third. If this pillar is removed, like the Pillars of Hercules, humanity will collapse. A change of thought is then imposed on us” , assured Petro, according to a press release from the Colombian Presidency.
