Pyros, singing, dancing! In the Swissporarena, following the 2-0 win in the second leg once morest Schaffhausen, the pent-up pressure is gone. Well over an hour following the final whistle, the stadium is still celebrating. After the lap of honor, coach Mario Frick is summoned in front of the curve to jump with the players. Under the Liechtensteiner, the FCL had an impressive second half of the season – and following a moderate barrage first leg, they still made a clear improvement. Frick’s mission to stay in the league is complete!
A year ago he was relegated to the Challenge League with Vaduz – now he was spared this nasty déjà vu. Frick says: “The relief is huge!” The players and the club would have more than deserved it following this enormous effort. And he admits: “This win was extremely important for me too. I don’t think I have to tell you what it would have meant for my coaching career if I had been relegated twice in a row.”
“I want to fulfill this contract”
His good work might also get other clubs on the scene, especially since the coaching quake this summer in the Super League is known to be huge. But Frick says directly: “I still have a year of contract. And I want to fulfill this.” The FCL supporters will be happy to hear that.
The fans? They are the big topic with the FCL protagonists following the game anyway. Both keeper Marius Müller and vice-captain Pascal Schürpf dedicate the victory to the loud audience. Müller: “I’ve never experienced anything like it! We’ve played some real shit together this season, but we’ve never been booed. The fans played a huge part in the fact that we were able to turn it around in the second half of the season.”
Müller is “simply proud!”
President Stefan Wolf, who has also been busy putting together a plan B in the event of relegation, is also overjoyed following the rescue. Before the game, he felt “extreme nervousness, huge tension and huge pressure” – that’s all gone now. “I’m just really happy that we made it.” He knows that relegation would have had massive financial consequences for the club.
But Frick and his men managed to fix it in extremis. Müller says: “I’m just proud!”
