Allison “Ally” Smith from Charlottesville, Virginia, works with her organization “Colby’s Crew Rescue” – named following one of her protégés – to rescue horses in distress. In a video on „The Dodo“ she tells the touching story of her latest case: gelding Shane. At first encounter, the horse can barely walk. “His hooves looked like flippers,” Ally recalls. The horn is cracked and large parts are badly broken off, but the toes are much too long. His extreme underweight is also alarming. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old sees a realistic chance. “He has so much life ahead of him if we can just get his feet under control,” she says. Already following the first visit of the farrier, Shane can walk a little better. Although he is clearly in pain and can hardly shift his weight onto one hoof, the gelding bravely persevered. With a lot of love and patience, Ally continues to take care of the neglected horse. She gets help from experienced veterinarians and feeding experts who ensure medical care and the right horse feed. And indeed: the gelding is slowly recovering. As time goes by, he blooms more and more. The hooves of the ten-year-old horse also make significant progress with each treatment. Even first trips to the sand paddock are possible once more. “Seeing him run was absolutely incredible.”

It’s moments like these that encourage Ally Smith to do her work and keep fighting. The young animal rights activist has already saved more than 100 horses from slaughter. On her Instagram channel “ohkaytacos” she regularly shows insights into the lives of her four-legged friends. But the 29-year-old wants to go further. Another four-legged protégé made the decisive difference. “Big John inspired us to start the Big John Initiative, centered on the saying ‘not one more’. That means we don’t want any other former workhorse to go to the slaughterhouse.” The abused Lipizzaner mare Capriola also needs urgent help when she gets caught in the horse flap.
