The Brazilian authorities rescued 225 people who worked in conditions analogous to slavery on farms in the Amazonian state of Pará, official sources reported this Saturday (09.02.2023).

Those rescued -including a minor- worked without defined schedules or adequate safety equipment and were forced to live in crowded, unhealthy spaces and in precarious conditions.

The actions carried out by the Federal Police, the Public Ministry of Labor and the Regional Superintendency of Labor took place last week in five farms located in the municipalities of Capitão Poço, Garrafão do Norte, Tomé Açu and Terra Alta, but were only disclosed this Saturday.

The rescued workers worked irregularly in açaí, oil palm and soybean crops.

According to the Federal Police statement, the minor under 15 years of age “was immediately separated from the activities” and the pertinent measures are being taken to “ensure that his rights are repaired.”

The other workers are also receiving assistance to ensure they are compensated.

Slave labor is a frequent drama on many Brazilian farms, the authorities themselves admit.

According to official data, last year Brazil rescued 2,575 workers in conditions similar to slavery, in various control operations, which represented an increase of 31% compared to 2021.
