After rescuing 170 migrants from a canoe off Mauritania, the Civil Guard, in particular its patrol boat Río Tajo fired shots into the air to quell an attempted mutiny aboard the Tagus patrol boat. According to sources from the Armed Institute, Mauritania refused to allow the survivors to disembark in Nouadhibou and the Civil Guard headed for the Canary Islands, the newspaper “El Mundo” reported.

Reporting information from sources of the Armed Institute, said newspaper informs that “twenty agents of the Civil Guard on board the Tagus rescued in Mauritanian waters 170 men who were traveling on board a cayuco and who risked drifting. These sources emphasize that all the survivors were men, “strong”, and that there were no women or children on board the boat”.

Their attempt to disembark at the Mauritanian port to repatriate the survivors having failed, given the refusal of the Mauritanian gendarmes. Frontex officials “were not very generous or that the Mauritanian commanders demanded a lot” when agreeing to disembark”, it was said, referring to unofficial payments.

Eventually, the Río Tajo ship decided to take the 170 migrants to the Canary Islands. Between communication difficulties and hunger, the survivors would have made themselves heard by wanting, it is said, to face the patrol, with regarding twenty agents, informed the same sources. This is what would have provoked shots in the air with their service weapons to “stop” the advance of the rescued who were protesting once morest the situation in which they were traveling.

The same sources add that “the agents sometimes had to take refuge inside the boat to avoid new attempts at mutiny”…
