(CNN) A baby walrus was found wandering alone in northern Alaska and was rescued and held 24/7 by staff.
The baby is estimated to be regarding one month old and weighs regarding 63 kilograms. It was discovered in the North Slope region, regarding 4 miles inland from the Beaufort Sea in northern Alaska, and arrived at the Alaska Sealife Center on the 1st of this month.
Pacific walruses are usually found at sea or along the western coastline, where they are unusual. It is not known how the baby made it inland.
It is the first time in four years that the center has protected a walrus. It will be the 10th in the 25 years since its establishment.
For the first two years following birth, walruses are cared for by their mothers. But no adult walruses were found around the babies found this time.
“It was clear that they might not live long without protection,” the center explains.
The baby was moved to a warehouse and spent the night under the watchful eye of staff, before being transferred to the center by plane the next day.
Tests confirmed dehydration and confirmed the possibility of infection. The veterinarian ordered cuddle care that continues to snuggle up to the baby 24 hours a day so that the baby can grow healthily and safely. The purpose of the 24-hour cuddle is to create an environment similar to that of a mother walrus.
According to the center’s Facebook post on the 5th, the baby continues to have a good appetite and looks energetic.
