The city of Oakland, California, has implemented a pilot scheme that involves providing weekly payments to students, with the aim of improving school attendance and combating the problem of dropouts.
As an incentive, students who maintain perfect attendance throughout the 10 weeks of the program will receive $50 each week.
According to local media, the city government has defined perfect attendance as students attending all classes for the week and completing an emotional well-being assessment.
It is worth noting that the budget for public schools increases when there is greater student attendance, and decreases when there is absenteeism.
Formally called the Equitable Design Project, this initiative goes beyond encouraging school attendance to also offer financial support to students facing certain difficulties.
This educational proposal, after three years of implementation, has yielded satisfactory results by significantly reducing class absences, consolidating itself as an effective strategy.
