Lawmakers, leaving Capitol Hill for the weekend, told reporters they would hold a “candidates’ forum” on Monday to choose a new flag bearer.
According to them, several contenders should be announced on Sunday.
“We have to come together and figure out who is going to be our chairman,” Mr Jordan told reporters after confirming he would end his run for the post.
“I’m going to work as hard as I can to help that person so we can go help the American people.” I’m also going to go back to work.”
In the 17 days since Kevin McCarthy was ousted in a revolt by right-wing hardliners, no other Republican has managed to garner enough votes to replace him, sparking one of Washington’s biggest institutional crises in decades.
Mr. Jordan’s failure further deepened divisions within the Republican Party and extended what had already been weeks of congressional paralysis at a time of heightened international tensions. Tensions have also increased within the country due to the impending government shutdown in less than a month.
Although Mr. Jordan is backed by former President Trump, who is hoping to return to the White House in next year’s election, he was opposed by all Democrats in the House of Representatives, joined by 25 Republicans, in the third vote in four days.
The US media writes that next week, when the search for the chairman starts again, at least three of Mr. Jordan’s colleagues will try to apply for this post.

**Interview with Political Analyst Dr. Sarah Thompson on the House Speaker Vote**
**Host:** Welcome back to our political roundtable. Today, we’re discussing the recent developments in the House speaker race, particularly Rep. Jim Jordan’s setback after losing the first ballot. Joining us is political analyst Dr. Sarah Thompson. Sarah, thank you for being here.
**Dr. Thompson:** Thank you for having me!
**Host:** So, Jim Jordan faced significant opposition in his bid for House speaker. What does losing the first ballot mean for him and the Republican Party?
**Dr. Thompson:** Losing the first ballot is certainly a blow to Jim Jordan’s leadership aspirations. It indicates that there’s a notable faction within the Republican Party that is unwilling to support him. This could signal deeper divisions among the party members, which could complicate future unity as they look for a new leader.
**Host:** We’ve heard about a “candidates’ forum” scheduled for Monday. What can we expect from that event?
**Dr. Thompson:** The candidates’ forum is crucial. It will give lawmakers the opportunity to discuss potential candidates and their visions for the role. We should expect several contenders to emerge, and this forum will likely help to clarify who is favored by the majority. It’s a chance for Republicans to coalesce behind a single candidate rather than remain divided as they are currently.
**Host:** Jim Jordan mentioned wanting to help the next candidate after ending his run. Is this a strategy for party unity?
**Dr. Thompson:** Absolutely. By stepping back gracefully and pledging support for the eventual nominee, Jordan is definitely trying to maintain his standing within the party and promote a sense of unity. It’s a smart move that could help mend fences with those who opposed him and position him favorably for future leadership opportunities.
**Host:** What impact do you think this internal struggle will have on the legislative agenda moving forward?
**Dr. Thompson:** The internal struggle could have significant consequences for the legislative agenda. If the Republicans cannot quickly select a speaker, it may hinder their ability to effectively address key policy issues and move forward with proposed legislation. Additionally, it might embolden opposition parties if they see disarray within the GOP.
**Host:** Sounds like we’re in for an interesting few days. Thank you, Dr. Thompson, for your insights.
**Dr. Thompson:** Thank you! Always a pleasure to discuss political developments.
**Host:** We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story, so stay tuned for more updates.
