Republicans will take over the majority in the new US Senate. This became clear on Wednesday night after their candidates won in West Virginia and Ohio. The House of Congress is currently controlled by Democrats. In the election, 34 of the 100 Senate seats will be re-elected. The situation in the House of Representatives, however, remains unclear. With their victory in the Senate, Donald Trump’s Republicans could block Democratic legislation.
Jim Justice initially prevailed against Democrat Glenn Elliott in the state of West Virginia. The Senate seat was previously occupied by former Democrat and now independent Joe Manchin, who decided not to run again. Democrat Elizabeth Warren successfully defended her seat in the US Senate for the state of Massachusetts. The 75-year-old Warren is a leading representative of the left wing of the Democratic Party and has made a name for herself as a critic of large banks and corporations. For the first time in US history, two black women will sit in the Senate at the same time, following the victory of two Democrats, Angela Alsobrooks in Maryland and Lisa Blunt Rochester in Delaware. Of the more than 2,000 current Senate members, only three have been black female politicians – one of whom was the Democratic US presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders defended his Senate seat for the state of Vermont. The 83-year-old Sanders has been shaping left-wing politics in the USA for decades – he has been represented in Congress for over 30 years. He initially represented Vermont as a member of the House of Representatives before moving to the Senate in 2007. Despite his independence, Sanders mostly votes with the Democrats. In 2016 and 2020 he unsuccessfully ran for the party’s presidential nomination.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are also up for election. With Sarah McBride in Delaware for the Democrats, an avowedly transgender representative will be represented for the first time. Marjorie Taylor Greene is once again representing her Georgia state constituency; since her election in 2020, she has quickly gained national prominence as one of the leading hardliners on the right wing of her party. She is for her vehement support of Donald Trump.
Mike Johnson continues to represent his Louisiana constituency, was elected speaker of the chamber last year and assumed a key leadership role within the Republican Party. As expected, Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi defended her seat in the House of Representatives. The 84-year-old continues to represent her constituency in the state of California. The former speaker of the House of Representatives has sat in the House of Representatives since 1987 and is one of the most influential masterminds within the Democratic Party.
