A NUMBER of Republican lawmakers have accused United States (US) President Joe Biden’s campaign narrative of being the cause of the shooting incident once morest Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, Saturday (13/7).

The narrative in question was when Biden made private phone calls with campaign donors last week.

Biden said in the call: “I have one job, and that is to defeat Donald Trump. I truly believe I am the best person to do that. So, we’re done talking regarding this debate. Now it’s time to take aim at Trump.”

“Joe Biden sent the order,” Georgia Republican Rep. Mike Collins wrote on X, in response to a post regarding Biden’s comments to donors.

In another post, Collins wrote “they are trying to neutralize the threat,” responding to a separate graphic featuring the president’s comments.

“Notice that following the assassination attempt on Trump, the same people who wanted him prosecuted for calling on his supporters to march peacefully to the Capitol on January 6th did not call for the prosecution of President Biden following he said it was time to put President Trump on the spot following their debate,” Collins wrote.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee also referred to Biden’s comments in a social media post. “Just days ago, Biden said ‘it’s time to target Trump.’ Today, there was an assassination attempt on President Trump,” she wrote Saturday (7/13).

Biden had said it was premature to call the shooting an assassination attempt on Trump. But in a subsequent statement, Biden called the attack abhorrent and added that there was no place for such violence in the United States.

FBI officials identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old man who was killed by a Secret Service agent.

Crooks is said to be registered as a member of the Republican Party, Trump’s party. However, Crooks was also found to have donated US$15 (around Rp205 thousand at the exchange rate of Rp13,650 at the time) in January 2020 to a Democratic Party voter participation group. (BBC/P-5)
