Milwaukee (dts news agency) – The primary campaign for next year’s presidential election continued on Wednesday evening (local time) with the first TV debate of the Republican candidates. The general state of the nation under high inflation, climate change and the abortion issue were the first topics on the show.
Ex-President Donald Trump, who was the clear leader in the polls with just over 50 percent approval among Republicans, did not take part in the debate organized by his former home broadcaster “FoxNews”, according to him, because US citizens already knew him and his policies would know sufficiently. Instead, there were eight candidates who had to meet certain requirements, including at least one percent approval in surveys or a certain number of donations collected. The criteria were met by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is currently the second strongest candidate in the polls behind Trump, albeit with only around 15 percent approval and thus a comparatively large gap. Other internationally known names: Former Trump vice president Mike Pence, former UN ambassador Nikki Haley and former New Jersey governor Chris Christie, all of whom are below five percent in the polls.
Lesser known outside the US, but in third place with regarding 10 percent among Republicans: pharmaceutical entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, also Senator Tim Scott, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson.
