Florida Republican Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar warned Nicolas Maduro that he “cannot steal the election” from opposition leader Maria Corina Machado or the Venezuelan people.

“We hope that on July 28, Maduro will understand that he lost,” said Salazar, who believes that what happens will depend largely on the message that comes out of the White House.

In the event of Trump’s return to the White House, Salazar said that he will be in charge from Congress of “reminding the Republican Party and the Americans that Latin American countries are neighbors” and that the United States has “the duty to continue being the focus of hope and democracy” for the region.

Salazar also said that former US President Donald Trump is “a different person” since he survived an assassination attempt last Saturday at an election rally.

Important moment

“The party is at a very important moment because President Trump has changed. He took off one man’s clothes and put on another’s. It’s like before Christ and following Christ,” he said in statements to EFE during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

“Many people close to him have noticed the change. I don’t know if it’s spiritual or contemplative. He’s a different person now. And because he’s a different person, the party is going to be a different party,” he said.

Salazar, who is of Cuban origin, said that Republicans should face the elections next November with “a message of unity and civility.” “We should not fight with people, we should fight with ideas,” he said.

The congresswoman blamed Joe Biden’s administration for the rise in food and gasoline prices, and expressed her conviction that Americans “will pay the price” next November.
