Republican backbenchers want top parliamentary job

After the Republican Jim Jordan was eliminated from the race for the most powerful chief position in the US Parliament, various party colleagues are applying for the office. Following Jordan’s withdrawal on Friday, several less prominent Republican lawmakers announced their intention to run for chairman of the US House of Representatives. Among the applicants are Tom Emmer from the leadership of the Republican faction and MPs Mike Johnson and Byron Donalds.

On Monday evening (local time), the group wants to meet in Washington for an internal meeting in which the candidates will introduce themselves. According to the group, the electoral process in the plenary session should continue as far as possible on Tuesday. Until then, the legislative work in the chamber remains largely idle.

After losing three rounds of voting for the chairmanship, the hardliner Jordan dropped out of the race on Friday. The Republican group dropped the confidant of former US President Donald Trump as their candidate. Two and a half weeks following the dramatic removal of the previous chairman of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, also in a dispute between Trump hardliners and more moderates, the search for a successor began all over once more.

McCarthy was voted out of the post in a historic vote at the beginning of October. Radical Republicans had driven him out of office. It was the first time in US history that a chairman of the House of Representatives lost his job in this way. The office is ranked third in the United States following the president and vice president.

The Republicans only have a narrow majority in the House of Representatives and the group is extremely fragmented. It is therefore unclear which candidate will be able to rally the majority of Republican representatives behind them. Before Jordan, Steve Scalise from the parliamentary group leadership had already tried this in vain. Scalise ultimately withdrew his application before a vote in the chamber’s plenary session. The chaos in Parliament clearly shows the state the Republican Party is in.
