Prices fall and inflation slows. For the first time, the prices of the basket of products that our partner Nielsen IQ observes every month are falling in a “generalized” manner; since September, they have been cheaper by a little less than 1.10 euros in Alsace. As for inflation, it lost two points this month but continues to weigh on the French budget, whether for housing, food or the survival of businesses. To help save money, a young Bordeaux resident living in Strasbourg launched Reprice 6 months ago, a collaborative application which allows you to compare the price of products in different supermarkets.
Contributions once morest points for vouchers
Let’s imagine that we are looking to buy a jar of a famous spread. Simply enter your name in the application, click on the product with photo or scan its barcode and a card appears, showing the price of the product in different supermarkets around us. Carl Smith, the creator of the application, does the test: “we see that this product costs a minimum of 5.30 euros, and a maximum of 6.30 euros around me“.
All we have to do is go to the supermarket that offers the lowest price. But the application released six months ago is above all collaborative, because all the information found there is provided by the users, explains the thirty-year-old: “There are several different actions, for example add a store, add a product, correct the product sheet, enter the price“. To encourage users to contribute, he even thought of compensation : “Each time a user performs an action, they earn points. From 7,000 points, you earn a voucher of 15 euros for example in any supermarket or at Fnac“.

An idea from his own story
Carl Smith hopes to one day be able to transform these contributions into salaries for students, for example. The idea didn’t come to him out of nowhere, but of his own story : “I was very little, I must have been 11 or 12 years old. We were in a single-parent family with a single mom and saving money on groceries was a challenge. We had a large notebook that we filled with my little brother in which we put the prices of the three stores around us, to find out which was the cheapest and find the best deals. A way at the time to save money but also to free up a little pocket money for your leisure activities.

A concept that he wanted to share with as many people as possible in times of inflation. When the war in Ukraine started, inflation increased, people needed to save money on groceries, there were shortages… I told myself that it was the time to launch the application. People now have the opportunity to rely on the consumer community to find good deals and the best offers.“. There are currently numerous users in Colmar, Mulhouse and Reunion Island, where Carl Smith spent a few years. It is now a question of establishing himself in Alsace and then throughout France. The application is also available in Spanish, English, German and Italian.
