Repression in Venezuela during elections will be unacceptable

The White House warned on Thursday, July 25, that any “political repression” and act of “violence” in Venezuela’s elections to be held this Sunday, July 28, will be “unacceptable.”

“Any political repression and violence is unacceptable. And of course, regardless of who wins, we encourage both candidates to engage with the results peacefully and to work together for the good of all Venezuelans,” said John Kirby, spokesman for the National Security Council of the United States, in a press conference. Asked by a reporter if he thinks Venezuelan President and re-election candidate Nicolas Maduro could take steps to allegedly manipulate the election result, Kirby said it is “hard to know exactly how this will play out.”

“The reason I mentioned this is to make it clear to Mr. Maduro that we are paying attention. We are watching this closely,” he insisted.

Kirby also hopes that the candidate who wins the presidential election will safeguard Venezuela’s “democratic institutions.”

“Elections must be free and fair, without repression, without voter intimidation, and again, regardless of who wins, our expectation is that the winner will continue to uphold democratic institutions,” he said.

Venezuela is holding presidential elections this Sunday, July 28, which are considered decisive, with a united opposition and the attentive gaze of the international community.

The ruling party, with Maduro at the helm, is playing for its continued power, which nine candidates aspire to achieve, including Edmundo González Urrutia of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), all with promises of profound changes and transformations.

Along the same lines as Kirby, the US State Department’s representative for Latin America, Brian Nichols, reiterated the importance of the initiative for his country. the “restoration of democracy in Venezuela.”

He also noted that citizen participation will be a key factor in the presidential elections in Venezuela on July 28.

Nichols noted that the U.S. has been in contact with other leaders in the region to address the situation in Venezuela.
