Report: The number of abortions in the United States has increased since the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade

Abortion was slightly more common throughout the United States in the first three months of this year than it was before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and paved the way for American states to ban abortion.

This is shown by a survey carried out by the non-profit organization Society of Family Planning, which supports the right to self-determined abortion in the United States.

A major reason for the increase is that some Democratic states passed laws to protect doctors who offer e-consultations to patients from states with abortion bans

Points to e-consultations

The mapping shows that in states with a total ban on abortion there were almost no abortions in the first three months of the year, while the number was halved in states that prohibit abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy, before many women know they are pregnant. There are 14 states in the US that enforce a total ban on abortion, with a few exceptions, while four other states prohibit abortion after the sixth week.

However, the number of abortions has increased in states where abortion is still legal until late in pregnancy. The increase is highest in the states of Illinois, Kansas and New Mexico, which border states that have banned abortion.

In March, doctors in other states gave prescriptions for abortion pills through e-consultations to nearly 10,000 patients from states with bans or restrictions on the same service. Such abortions account for almost one in ten abortions in the United States.

Important battle issue

The mapping has been done through monthly surveys since April 2022 and shows how those who offer and take abortions have adapted to changed laws.

The Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling, which upheld the federal right to abortion in the United States, was overturned in June 2022.

The new survey comes ahead of the presidential election in the United States, where abortion is an important contentious issue.
