Report: the enthusiasm of African students for technical training in Quebec

Published on : 23/09/2022 – 11:00

Over the past 5 years, the number of African students enrolled in Quebec CEGEPs*, general and vocational colleges, the equivalent of French IUTs, has more than doubled.

Coming from Cameroon, Senegal and the Maghreb countries, these students are heading for the French-speaking province of Canada to acquire a very practical technical training that allows them to work on site as soon as they obtain their diplomas. Often, these are people who have already gone to university in their country of origin, but who have not found a job, due to a lack of knowledge adapted to the business world. Quebec recruits candidates directly in Africa, especially in the fields of health, information technology and industrial engineering. This allows training centers, far from major urban centers and lacking in clientele, to maintain their programs thanks to this influx of students. Obtaining a study visa from the Canadian authorities, however, delays the projects of many African students because the Department of Immigration is currently facing significant delays in processing files.
