Israel launched an airstrike on the Yemeni port of Hodeida in response to a deadly drone attack by Houthi militias in Tel Aviv, killing at least three people, according to Yemeni sources. Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah TV reported late Sunday that a total of 87 people had been injured, citing health authorities. According to the Israeli military, warplanes attacked military targets in important ports of the Houthi armed forces.

A Houthi spokesman confirmed that Israel had attacked “civilian installations” in Yemen. The targets are oil and power plants. Houthi armed spokesman Yahya Sarri said that the Houthi armed forces are preparing for a “long-term war” with Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attack in Yemen “shows our enemies that there is no place beyond the reach of Israel’s long arm”. The head of the Israeli government said that weapons from Iran entered the country through the attacked port of Hodeidah.

A combat drone struck the center of Israel’s coastal metropolis of Tel Aviv on Friday, killing one man and injuring at least eight others. According to the Israeli military, the long-range drone came from Yemen. Houthi militias speak of attacks on “important targets” in Tel Aviv. Israeli Defense Minister Yov Galante later announced retaliation.

Defense Ministry spokesman Turki al-Malki said Saudi Arabia was not involved in the attack on Hodeidah. Saudi Arabia will not allow anyone to penetrate its airspace.

Saudi Arabia has sided with the government in Sanaa, Yemen, in the war between Iran-backed Shiite Houthi rebels and Yemen’s government in Sanaa, which is dominated by Sunnis and other groups. The ultra-conservative kingdom borders northern Yemen and sees itself as a protective force for Sunnis.
