The adoption of generative artificial intelligence technologies has reached adoption levels at unprecedented speed, according to a new report from technology publisher and training provider O’Reilly. Published last Wednesday, the document points out that two out of three respondents already used platforms like ChatGPT on a daily basis.

“We’ve never seen a technology adopted as quickly as generative AI – it’s hard to believe that ChatGPT is just a year old,” the company points out in the report.

However, there is great concern regarding the legal limits of this type of technology and there is also difficulty in finding successful cases of use in the business environment, leaving room for legal consequences that are still unclear. This is combined with the high cost of building infrastructure for AI.

The research for the report was carried out from September 14th to 23rd. Among a total of 4,782 responses, 2,857 respondents answered all questions, O’Reilly said. The majority of responses, 74%, came from North America or Europe.

There are also other insights, such as: 54% of AI users expect the biggest benefit of AI to be greater productivity. Only 4% pointed to lower employee counts; and 77% of respondents use AI to help with programming.

Among specific applications, the most frequent include fraud detection, education and customer relationship management. AI users said AI programming (66%) and data analysis (59%) were the most needed skills.

Many users are still unfamiliar with the technologies: 26% have been working with AI for less than a year, while 18% already have applications in production. In parallel, 16% of respondents working with AI used open source models.
