“[Report] Busan Expo: I aspire to hold the grandest finale featuring an outstanding fireworks display”

On the night of April 6th, a spectacular fireworks show was held at Gwangalli Beach in Suyeong-gu, Busan to bid for the 2030 Busan World Expo. The event featured 80,000 fireworks embroidered on the night sea, hoping to host the Expo at the beach. The area around Gwangalli Beach was packed with crowds two hours before the start of the show. Every street from the railway station entrance to the beach was filled with people of all ages and genders. Citizens who visited the place waited for the fireworks show to begin by spreading mats on the sandy beach or standing on the roadside. A talk show and performance were held before the fireworks show to create excitement. Busan Mayor Park Hyeong-joon greeted the BIE inspection team and citizens and expressed his pride in holding the fireworks festival safely, which was the highlight of the event. With the slogan “Korea’s aspirations for the Expo will bloom like a hot flame tonight”, the fireworks began drawing in the night sky above Gwangan Bridge, adorned with flowers, hearts, and cats. About 200,000 citizens gathered for the event, cheering for the 2030 Expo with one heart. The mood was one of hope, with spectators expressing their desire for the Expo to be held and the region and country’s economy to be revitalized.

On the night of the 6th, the last day of the BIE inspection team’s visit to Busan, 80,000 fireworks were embroidered on the night sea in hopes of hosting the 2030 Busan World Expo at Gwangalli Beach.

The area around Gwangalli Beach in Busan, where the fireworks show was held, was filled with crowds two hours before the start of the event.

Every street from the entrance of the urban railway station to the beach was filled with people of all ages and genders, and the restaurants nearby were crowded with customers who wanted to have a meal before watching the fireworks show. Police and lifeguards in yellow vests stood everywhere waving light sticks to manage the crowds.

Citizens who visited Gwangalli with their families or friends waited for the event to start by spreading mats on the sandy beach or standing on the roadside, except for the 3,000 seats for the BIE inspection team and guests.

At 7:30 p.m., a talk show introducing citizen stories and the expo and a congratulatory performance by Band Cardi, the public relations ambassador for the 2030 Busan World Expo, were held to heighten the excitement at the site.

Mayor Park said, “Today is the last night in Busan for the inspection team, and I think it must have been conveyed how thoroughly Busan prepared for the expo. The highlight of the schedule is likely to be the fireworks show today. The fact that we held the fireworks festival safely without any major accidents is our biggest pride.”

“Korea’s aspirations for the expo will bloom like a hot flame tonight,” he added.

At 8:30 pm, with a roar, fireworks began to be drawn in the night sky above Gwangan Bridge in earnest.

Along with the colorful lights of Gwangan Bridge, fireworks in various shapes such as flowers, hearts, and cats adorned the night sky to the famous pop song that everyone can enjoy.

This fireworks show, decorated with the theme of ‘K-Wave’, expressed splendid shapes with famous movie theme songs and representative BTS songs as background music.

In addition, along with the theme song of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, “Hand in hand,” the phrase “I hope that in 2030 we will be able to feel the emotion of becoming one once more in 2030” was engraved on Gwangandaegyo Bridge.

In particular, the newly introduced ‘Wave Fireworks’ in this fireworks show flowed down from the sky as if drawing a picture on drawing paper, and when the famous ‘Niagara Falls’ of the Gwangalli Fireworks Show and the 25-inch large fireworks exploded, cheers erupted from everywhere.

On this day, regarding 200,000 citizens (according to the police) came to the fireworks show and cheered for the 2030 Expo with one heart.

Woo Jeong-won (66, male) from Gangseo-gu said, “Busan has been preparing hard for the hosting of the expo for a long time, and I am very proud that everyone has come together to conduct an on-site due diligence.” I hope it blooms like a flame,” he said.

Kwak Na-mi (42, female), who visited Gwangalli with her family, said, “I brought my children because there was a fireworks show to wish for the Busan Expo,” and added, “It was a depressed atmosphere for several years due to the corona, but the atmosphere of the region while preparing for the Expo was I am happy that it seems to have become active, and I hope that it is actually hosted and the economy of Busan and Korea is revitalized.”

Kim Guk-sa (78, male) from Geumjeong-gu said, “The Expo is really important in that it becomes a hope for our future. I think the process of doing everything is very meaningful.”
