Repatriation Efforts from Gaza Strip to Belgium: Updates on Rafah Route and Refugee Accommodation

2023-10-15 12:14:00

“We are examining with the United States whether we can repatriate people to Belgium via Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip,” said Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne on Sunday on VTM Nieuws.

The crossing points between Gaza and Israel are closed, as well as that between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Belgium is looking for a solution for its nationals, “but for the moment it is very difficult”. “Gaza is sealed off, both from Israel and Egypt.”

If there were to be refugees leaving the Gaza Strip, they should first be accommodated in the region, added Deputy Prime Minister Open Vld, when asked regarding possible migratory movements. “There are enough prosperous countries in the region, it is up to them to do the work,” he said.

Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder announced that 92 Belgians and 13 Europeans had boarded the Belgian Defense A400M this Sunday morning in Tel Aviv, and would be in Belgium around 5:30 p.m. The possibility of a second repatriation flight will then be studied.
