The repairs carried out on the building of the Minor Basilica Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Merida have been made difficult by the lack of documents with the details of its construction, so the team carrying out the current work is making a meticulous photographic and documentary record for posterity, reported Professor Victor Daniel Albornoz, Director of Culture at the University of Los Andes, who is part of the Ulandino team for the care of the cultural heritage of the Merida entity.

The work carried out included the removal of some 40 thousand tiles, of which only about 30 thousand could be rescued, the repair and restoration of all areas of the roof, waterproofing, rescue of stained glass, painting and every detail, carrying out comprehensive work with great delicacy and meticulousness, respecting the original work created by Manuel Mujica Millán, said Víctor Daniel Albornoz.

Before making each decision, the team discusses and analyzes each of the possibilities based on the knowledge of each professional, reviewing the valuation of the heritage, the evolution of the noble materials used in the original construction of the Cathedral, among many other details to take into account, said Albornoz.

Among the ULA professors who support the work carried out by the Institute of Cultural Heritage, led by Professor Delia Bottaro, are members of the Merida Cultural Heritage Commission, such as the former dean of the Faculty of Art, Professor Noris Pereira, together with Argemiro Castillo, dean of Architecture, Professors Jorge Gómez and Julio Lugo, director of the Galería la Otra Banda, both from the Master’s in History of Architecture, Professors Bernardo Moncada, Devia Avendaño, Claudia Lafalle, specialist in security issues in architecture, and Víctor Daniel Albornoz, director of Culture at ULA.
