The “repair bonus”a financial boost aimed at encouraging individuals to have their defective products repaired rather than buying new ones, will be “simplified, expanded and augmented” from January 1, announced Friday October 20 the Minister of Ecological Transition, Christophe Béchu.
In order to simplify procedures, the number of accredited repairers, currently 4,300, will be “doubled next year”, and remote repairs will be included in the system, specified the former mayor of Angers. Twenty-four new products will be affected, bringing their number to 73.
Another change: the criterion “accidental breakage” will gradually become eligible, like a smartphone screen or a washing machine handle. To begin with, 25 euros will be deducted from the consumer’s bill when they have their broken smartphone screen repaired. Finally, the bonus will be increased by 5 euros on “more than twenty products” and doubled for five others: washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, televisions and vacuum cleaners.

“If we kept a washing machine, dishwasher and dryer for one more year, we would save all of the emissions of the Aix-Marseille metropolis, or two million tonnes of CO2”, defended Mr. Béchu. The bonus will also be increased by 20% when parts from the circular economy are used for the repair.
Implementation of a “repairability” bonus
All of these measures aim to “demonstrate that we cannot achieve economic growth by betting on planned obsolescence”declared the minister, in a speech in Lorsgey (Côte-d’Or), historic factory of the French group Seb, leader in small domestic equipment. “You are the living demonstration that we can reconcile economic growth and sustainability”he declared on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the famous Cocotte-Minute, invented in 1953 by this family group, whose creator, a tinker, had settled in this village north of Dijon in 1857.
Seb prides himself on having “repairability is in its DNA”making sure to be able to restart devices that have “up to over 40 years”according to its president and CEO, Thierry de La Tour d’Artaise. “It must be admitted, other brands have voluntarily prevented the repair of their products”recalled Mr. Béchu: “It is not normal that, in two thirds of cases, we throw things away. It is not normal that we buy 16 million smartphones and only repair a million. »
In addition to the repair, Roland Lescure, Minister Delegate for Industry, also present at Seb, announced the implementation of a bonus “repairability”already provided for in the anti-waste law for a circular economy (AGEC) passed in February 2020. Products “repairable” will benefit from a bonus of 10 euros to 40 euros to be deducted from their purchase price, while “non-repairable” will be subject to a penalty of the same amount to be added to the invoice.
“It’s regarding encouraging the purchase of repairable products”, explained Mr. Lescure. A “repairability note”established out of 10, will thus be given to a wide range of products, the list of which will be established during a consultation which will be launched ” in a few days “. “We declare war on planned obsolescence”he said.
