Reopening of Cointe Tunnel: Improved Mobility and Safety Upgrades in Liège

2023-08-27 15:07:00

The Cointe tunnel in Liège reopened to traffic on Sunday followingnoon around 4:30 p.m. It had been closed for nearly two months for modernization and upgrading work. The reopening was scheduled for Monday morning, but the operation was finalized more quickly than expected. And like “in terms of mobility, every hour counts“, the tunnel was directly returned to users, said the Sofico spokesperson. The other part of the tunnel, towards Brussels, will undergo a similar treatment in the summer of 2024.

During this project, which began on July 7, the Complementary Infrastructure Financing Company (Sofico) and its technical partner, the Service public de Wallonie, notably installed passive fire protection on 19,200 m² of ceiling, i.e. the equivalent of regarding three football pitches. This coating must limit the damage to the concrete in the event of a fire. Several equipment such as cameras, the cable allowing the circulation of radio waves in the tunnel and the optical fiber, which detects and locates fires, have in particular been renewed.

The objective being to improve mobility and safety on this 1.6 km section, the emergency exits have also benefited from improvements. In addition to the replacement of the doors, additional visual signals have been added nearby. The overpressure system, which prevents fire smoke from entering the emergency corridors, has also been reinforced.

The school holiday period had been chosen on purpose by the Sofico. Indeed, the work cannot be carried out without a complete cut in traffic, the company has selected the moment “least problematic for users“.
