On Wednesday, 14 mayors published a letter in the Journal to urge the government to adopt a public rent register.

“All ideas are welcomed with openness,” reacted the office of the Minister of Housing in an email to the QMI Agency.

In their missive, the mayors recalled that it would be relatively easy to set up such a register as the organization Vivre en Ville has already developed a platform, which would be offered to the government “at zero cost”.

Listen to Marie Montpetit’s interview with Julie Bourdon, Mayor of Granby via QUB radio:

“And Quebec already has the necessary tools for a register to apply now, in all regions.”

According to the mayors, this solution is necessary to put an end to the increase in rents and to “defuse the housing crisis”. A rent register would allow tenants to know the amount of the most recent rent, in order to be able to refuse an abusive increase.

France-Élaine Duranceau also met with the Vivre en Ville organization last Monday. “A very good discussion that she intends to continue,” said her cabinet.

In addition, the Minister’s team reiterated that there are several solutions to the housing crisis, and that the study of Bill 31 on housing, tabled at the end of the last parliamentary session, will be the opportunity to discuss it next fall.

“We should not work against each other. We must find a solution where everyone will find his account,” concluded the office of Minister Duranceau.
