The new adult emergency reception hall at Saint-André hospital, at Bordeaux University Hospital, now lives up to the service provided. Bright, it has a circular central office, and you can access it lying down, driven by an ambulance driver or firefighters, and also on foot. On the one hand, users on foot are received by a nurse, on the other hand, another nurse welcomes patients who are lying down.

Bright, it has a circular central office, and you can access it lying down, driven by an ambulance driver or firefighters, and also on foot. Thursday, December 21, this renovation was inaugurated by the entire team, also with a representative of the Regional Health Agency (ARS), the management of the CHU in the presence of its general director Yann Bubien, and Professor Nicolas Grenier , president of the Establishment Medical Commission (CME). This airlock no longer has anything to do with the old emergency entrance which had not benefited from any renovation work for sixteen years.
“The work took place on an occupied site,” recalled Yann Bubien, “which complicates the work of the caregivers on site, but we have no other choice. They lasted between September 18 and December 8, for a sum of 120,000 euros. In addition to the creation of the reception hall, four pre-consultation boxes have been opened, surrounded by a waiting area, and throughout the patient’s journey, privacy is respected. »

The emergency rooms of Saint-André have never closed, as if they were unrelated to the crisis that almost all the emergency services of the university hospitals in France went through. Doctor Isabelle Faure, head of the emergency and emergency departmentpermanent access to health care (Pass) of Saint-André, confirms this: “It’s true, we have never resorted to regulation by the center 15,” she admits. How to explain it? We are city center emergencies, many patients are referred to us, they suffer from cardiothoracic problems, abdominal pain, minor traumatologies, we also receive a precarious public. Our service is on a human scale, the team is united, with little turnover. There is a form of attachment. So, yes, we held on. »
70 passages per day
The emergency rooms of Saint-André have 70 visits per day. Doctor Thomas Mesnier, director of the emergency department at Bordeaux University Hospital, took advantage of this inauguration to take stock of the situation, three and a half months following his arrival in this position. “This renovation of the Saint-André emergency room is decisive for us. The reception and additional boxes were essential to ensure quality care for patients and caregivers. From January, a reception and referral doctor will be added to the current staff here, as well as in the adult emergency room in Pellegrin. Clearly, the emergency department has moved into a positive dynamic. »
The emergency rooms of Saint-André have benefited from major renovation work, certain areas still resemble the “GDR of Berlin” according to the director of the service, but everything should be brought up to standard quickly.

According to Thomas Mesnier, since last November, nine junior doctors have been recruited, four more than in previous months. “We are in talks with other candidates,” he assures. As a result, I no longer have any gaps in my schedule. I hope as soon as possible to do without regulation and open the doors of the Pellegrin emergency room, as before the crisis. Our problem today concerns the lack of downstream hospitalization beds; we would need between 10 and 20 to be completely comfortable. Result: patients are still stuck in emergency rooms for too long. »
Haut-Lévêque not before 2030
The Saint-André emergency medical team includes around a dozen doctors. This site, which has never let its guard down in recent years, is ultimately condemned to permanently close its doors, in favor of a large emergency service which would open at the Haut-Lévêque hospital in Pessac.
However, this renovation which is not completely finished retains its full meaning. Indeed, explains Doctor Isabelle Faure, “architectural work has a lifespan of between eight and ten years. Here, we were lagging far behind, we were the only emergency service in the whole of Gironde not to have benefited from any work. Some areas still resemble the Berlin GDR… We are going through a period of depression in terms of the number of emergency doctors, and offering a welcoming site adapted to the profession is an attractive asset. The move of the emergency department from Saint-André to Haut-Lévêque is not planned before at least 2030. In the meantime, we’re clean. »
6 million euros for maintenance
Benoît Elleboode, general director of ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine, announced the payment of additional financial support of 6 million euros to enable the Bordeaux University Hospital to carry out work in order to protect itself once morest major climatic events, likely to disrupt the reception and care of patients. Work to waterproof the terraces and refresh several units (pediatric center and emergency department) can thus be carried out from the beginning of 2024. The areas of the pediatric center will notably be equipped with an air conditioning system, which made the SUD Santé union say “thank you press”. In fact, the alert had been relayed in our columns and among our colleagues.
