“Renovating the Brussels Courthouse: Interior and Exterior Restoration Costs and Timelines”

2023-05-30 18:27:00

While the exterior renovation of the Brussels Courthouse is not yet complete, a study will be launched this time to restore and redevelop the interior of the Palace. How much will all this cost and when can we expect the work to be finished?

After 40 years of figuration, the scaffolding of the Brussels Courthouse finally comes on stage. “They have been there for 40 years for work that never took place“, explains Mathieu Michel, Secretary of State in charge of building management. “The idea is to do the renovation work on the facades. This will start shortly and the first phase will be completed in 2024.

The renovations of the facades of the Palace amount to 87 million euros. But the exterior is not the only one in need of urgent renovation. The interior of the Palais de Justice is in poor condition. “It’s a little bit of chaos“, says Thierry Henrard, an architect.”The building at first works like an extremely fine and well-regulated clock. But throughout its history, the cogs of this clock will be transformed little by little without it being significant at the time. But 140 years later, we can say that the clock no longer gives the exact time.

Energy concerns

To restart the clock, 1/3 of the stones in the palace will need to be replaced. However, renovating a listed, century-old building in 2023 also involves energy concerns. “It’s a building that spends a lot of money on energy“, confirms Jean-Pierre Buyle, administrator of the Poelaert Foundation.

Total cost of renovation works between 180 and 387 million euros. The building must be ready for 2040.
