“Renovate – Rent”: The subsidy increases to 60%

The new provision for improving the ministry’s program stands out “Renovate-Rent”, which is expected to come within the first 20 days of September and increase the subsidy to 60%. The “thorn” of expensive rents remains, but from the TIF announcements onwards, the government is expected to proceed with a number of interventions, with the aim of bringing more properties to the long-term rental market.

Closed properties

Many, including the Panhellenic Federation of Property Owners, believe that priority should be given to returning closed properties to the market. According to market estimates, there are about 700,000 foreclosed properties, of which about 150,000 could return to the market if their owners were able to renovate them. In this environment, the minister stated that “by September we will have voted the new provision to improve the “Renovate-Rent” program and increase the subsidy to 60%, in order to have more applications, because at the moment they amount to 1,000. Certainly within the first 20 days of September it will change and the 60% increase will apply retroactively to those who have applied for the specific program with 40% of the subsidy. At the same time, we will also increase the possibility it has for the renovation and it will go over 10,000″.

Special program

Regarding the other thorn that solutions are considered, the housing of civil servantsthe minister pointed out that “we will implement a broad program, after studying each case individually. That is, how can we utilize old police stations, old schools, municipal or public buildings, any housing stock that exists mainly on the islands and in mainland municipalities, in order to use them for the housing of civil servants. We’ll be ready to say more about that later in the year. Together with ETAD and EETAA, we have already collected the available buildings, which will obviously have to be valued, costing done with the engineers and we study how they can be renovated, always in cooperation with the Local Government. But we’re not ready for that yet.”

Social compensation

Finally, on her topic social compensation, announced that “the tender is expected to be issued within the next 3 months, maybe even a little earlier, and it will concern the utilization of State plots, such as DYPA. Our arrangement is ready, so essentially the updated 2022 will be voted on, definitely in September, so that the first competition can run. But what will it give you? On a PPP plot you will invite private individuals to build some flats, which will be given for social housing, at an affordable rent at the time, while the rest will be at normal market rates. This, however, gives you results after a while. Well, the immediate measures obviously have to do with social housing such as the rent subsidy,” explained Mrs. Zaharaki.
