The rail war is intensifying in France. After the opening of the first two high-speed lines between France and Spain in 2023, Renfe will tackle a 100% French section in 2024, between Paris, Lyon and Marseille. The Spanish railway company, which will compete in this segment with SNCF and Trenitalia, announced Thursday December 14 its arrival in the French capital and the increase in the number of high-speed trains operating in France.
For five months, Spanish trains between Spain and the French cities of Lyon and Marseille have already transported 250,000 travelers, with an average occupancy rate of 80%, according to Renfe. With this new service to Paris, the Spanish company intends to go from four daily trains to 16 per day from 2024. New lines passing through Montpellier and Nîmes are also planned. New head-on competition with SNCF, while the Italian company Trenitalia already operates on the section between Paris and Lyon.
