After four years of construction and 700,000 units sold, the Peugeot 2008 is rolling into the next phase of its career, completely renewed. For more than three years, the compact SUV has been one of the successful models in the segment, which it even led in Europe in 2021. The electrically powered variant e-2008 contributed a total of more than 75,000 units to the success. The share of the battery-operated variant is currently 17.8 percent.
The design of the 2008 has been significantly revised and now features the light signature first introduced on the 508 with three vertical light elements on the front section. The rear was also redesigned. In the middle of the new front, the company’s creative team placed the brand’s revised lion emblem. In the Allure and GT equipment versions, the new front section adopts a vertical pattern in the body color; the basic version has a horizontal pattern in glossy black.
In the interior, the digital instrument cluster on Allure and GT is located at eye level above the steering wheel; the ten-inch display has a new design and can be individually configured. The basic version comes to customers with an analogue information center. As before, the i-Cockpit and the compact steering wheel belong together, in which the controls for the radio, telephone and volume control as well as voice control are combined.
The drive range begins with the three-cylinder 1.2 Pure Tech with 100 hp (74 kW), which as the Pure Tech 130 EAT8 then produces 131 hp (96 kW), which is transmitted to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The diesel group is represented by the 1.5 Blue HDi 130 EAT8 with also 131 hp and eight-speed automatic transmission.
The electric variant e-2008 now has a range of 406 kilometers, exceeding its predecessor by more than 60 kilometers. At the same time, the output increases to 115 kW (156 hp), and the battery has also been increased by four to 54 kWh. The electric 2008 comes to customers with a 7.4 kW single-phase on-board charger as standard. The eleven kW three-phase charger is optional. Peugeot promises that it will take 35 minutes at a fast charging station for the battery to be charged from zero to 80 percent. Next year, a hybrid variant will join the E group. Thanks to hybrid technology, consumption should be reduced by 15 percent and more than 50 percent of the time in city traffic can be traveled in electric mode.
In addition to the 2008, Peugeot also gave the top model 508 a revision. As with the 2008, the redesigned front is dominated by the lion’s head, behind which, depending on the equipment, the radar technology is hidden. The person behind the steering wheel looks at a redesigned i-Cockpit, which was placed above the steering wheel and, according to those responsible at Peugeot, replaces a head-up display. The 4.76 meter sedan’s features include adaptive cruise control, active lane departure warning and the Night Vision night vision system, which detects pedestrians and animals even at dusk.
The top version is the PSE (Peugeot Sport Engineered), with a specially developed chassis that enables variable damping in three driving settings (comfort, hybrid, sport). A lower ride height with a wider track at the front (24 mm) and rear (twelve mm) as well as larger brake discs (380 mm) at the front and 20-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot 4S tires are intended to emphasize the sporty character.
In addition to the petrol 1.2 Pure Tech with 131 hp (96 kW) and automatic eight-speed gearbox, the 508 is also available from dealers as a diesel 131 hp (96 kW). The new plug-in hybrid drive with a 150 hp (110 kW) petrol engine plus an 81 kW (110 hp) electric motor is also available as an option. Also available as a plug-in hybrid with 188 hp (133 kW) powerful combustion engine and the 81 kW electric motor. The top model 360 e-EAT8 with all-wheel drive delivers 200 HP (147 kW) with the combustion engine and 83 kW (133 HP) electrical support as a plug-in. (aum/ww)
