The National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) – Water Branch – has announced the implementation of a project to renew the drinking water supply pipes supplying the city of Oujda, noting that the works reached 92%.
With a total cost of 230 million dirhams (MDH), this project, whose completion is scheduled for the end of 2023, comes following the frequent malfunctions of the pipes, thus causing disruptions in the supply of drinking water to the cities. Oujda, Taourirt, El Aïoun Sidi Mellouk and neighboring rural communities, ONEE said in a statement on Sunday.
According to the same source, the city of Oujda is currently supplied with drinking water from groundwater which provides 63% of the demand for drinking water, and whose production is provided jointly by ONEE and the Autonomous Intercommunal Distribution Board. of water and electricity of Oujda (RADEEO).

Surface water mobilized by the dams of Mohammed V and Machraa Hammadi contribute, for their part, up to 37% of the remaining demand, adds the press release, noting that the treatment of this water is provided by a station with a capacity of 84,000 cubic meters per day, before being transported via adduction pipes over a line of 100 km to the aforementioned cities.
ONEE also called for the collective mobilization of citizens and various stakeholders to rationalize the use of water in this current situation marked by a shortage of water resources, due to water stress and successive dry years observed in the Oriental region, noting that the services of the Office are working tirelessly to ensure the region’s supply of this vital material in good conditions.
