René Weiler on his dismissal in Japan
“I would have liked a different ending”
Two defeats in a row was one too many: René Weiler talks regarding his dismissal from the Kashima Antlers.
René Weiler is on the east coast of Japan completing all the formalities and packing his things. He will travel back to Switzerland at the weekend.
His dismissal from the Japanese record champions Kashima Antlers two days ago also caught him on the wrong foot. “It is surprising and disappointing for me that the end came as soon as I resisted. We were always classified in the top three places and are now only two points behind second in fifth.”
He doesn’t even want to speculate regarding the reasons for his abrupt departure. “Two defeats were just one too many for the leadership of the Antlers.” The fact that the club’s management sold its defense chief and top scorer to Belgium made his work even more difficult. The former Lucerne striker Blessing Eleke, brought in by Weiler, has not yet been used. In the end he is the victim of Japanese impatience. At the club where the Brazilian world star Zico has an advisory role.
Touching encounters
For Weiler, one of the country’s most charismatic and unconventional football coaches, it’s clear that cultural differences, while appealing, are also unpredictable. “The league is interesting and the encounters with people outside of football were very touching. That’s why I would have wished for a different ending.”
Now he will probably be back home by the weekend. “I will first reflect on what I have experienced and draw lessons from it. Multinational functioning is a challenge.” Weiler has already worked in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Egypt and Japan during his coaching career. And it goes without saying that a new adventure awaits one day.
But the priority now is to return to his family. He is looking forward to the last days of summer at Lake Zurich. And last but not least, local food.
