Ice Hockey ” The former president of the International Federation (IIHF), the Fribourgeois René Fasel, will be subjected to an investigation by the ethics commission of the IIHF for his comments on the sidelining of Russia. René Fasel (72) had been head of the IIHF from 1994 to 2021. He then became an adviser to the Continental League (KHL), a circuit which, in the eyes of the international federation, supports the war in Ukraine.
Mr. Fasel had criticized last month the decision to ban Russia and Belarus from all international hockey competitions. In an interview with Russian state media, he said the sanction was a sad moment in the history of the IIHF, adding that “sport should send people a message of unity and peace.”
“The code of ethics of the IIHF (…) demands that a president for life (Mr. Fasel holds this title) must behave in a manner that upholds the values of dignity, integrity, loyalty and responsibility in all his dealings of an economic nature , social, competitive and moral,” the IIHF said in a statement. According to the conclusions of the ethics commission, Mr. Fasel and the Russian federation risk a passage before the disciplinary council of the IIHF. ats
