With the rise of intolerance towards trans people and the numerous demonstrations once morest the teaching of gender theory, the event takes on its full meaning this year, according to Rita Baga.

“It’s okay to protest. Where I find it more frightening and alarming is when there is a regression in the rights of communities of sexual and gender diversity, because our existence is not a brake on yours,” she expresses.

She invites her detractors not to focus on the fate of drag queens: “I would not give up.”

The organizers are pleased that the exhibition was not the scene of demonstrations outside the enclosure.

A spokesperson for “Rendez-vous de la drag” acknowledges having had several concerns before the opening of the event.

“It’s certain that it’s a snub to the demonstrators […] The drag scene is very present. It is one of the most vibrant in America. Montreal’s drag scene is recognized. We want to show the public that the art of drag is for everyone,” underlines Yanick Brouillette.

An awards ceremony and a gala will conclude the “Rendez-vous de la drag” on Sunday evening.
