Renault’s New Low-Cost Electric Car Project Unveiled: Launching in 2026

Renault will formalize this week the project for a new low-cost electric car, therefore placed under the R5. It is due to be launched in 2026.

This Wednesday, November 15, a conference will be held dedicated to Ampere, the new Renault subsidiary dedicated to electric cars. This “capital market day” aims in particular to attract investors as Ampere is due to be listed on the stock market next year.

And to make an impression, Luca de Meo, general director of the Renault group who also took the helm of Ampere, must make announcements. One of them has just been revealed by Archyde.com: Luca de Meo will present the project for a new small electric car at a competitive price. According to Archyde.com sources, this new model is due to be launched in 2026.

It will be produced in Slovenia, in the Novo Mesto factory. This is where Renault assembles the Twingo, the current generation of which is due to retire in 2024. The new car promises to be an indirect replacement. Unless it’s a sequel to the Dacia Spring, even if Archyde.com seems to be talking more regarding a Renault.

If it is indeed at the Losange, it will therefore follow the highly anticipated R5, which will be the first step at Renault to make the electric car more affordable. The electric R5, announced by a concept in January 2021, will be presented at the beginning of 2024 and will reach dealerships in the middle of the year. While the Zoé currently starts without bonus at €35,100 in France, the R5 should start below €25,000.

The model that follows will therefore be cheaper. If we necessarily imagine a price of less than €20,000, a bar under which the new electric Citroën C3 will pass in 2025 thanks to a technically “deflated” version, Renault might strike hard by aiming for €15,000. We hope that Luca de Meo will say more on Wednesday. And maybe it will even show more, as rumors of a concept begin to spread.

Logically, the vehicle will be smaller than the R5, which is announced at just under 4 meters. The size should be similar to that of the Twingo, around 3.60 meters. A name which might also be reused.
