Comparing the month of October 2023 to that of 2022, there is reason to be reassured: registrations of private vehicles increased by 21.9% over one year according to figures d’autoactu, specialist in statistics. But it’s also worth remembering that new car sales hit rock bottom around this time last year, so despite 152,386 registrations, the market is still down 4.5% compared to the average of the last ten years. Sales of electric cars, for their part, outperformed with no less than 51.1% increase compared to last year, or 16.7% market share (25,473 cars). As individuals represent more than half of electric buyers, it will be interesting to see how these figures will evolve next year with the introduction of an “environmental score” which will decide which models will be entitled to a bonus, and how much. Last October anyway, battery cars weighed more than double compared to diesel registrations (11,889 units, or only 7.8% market share), energy which is collapsing with a decline of almost 30% compared to last year. Gasoline remains far ahead with 35.5% market share (+17.4%), followed by non-plug-in hybrids with 23.6% market share (36,024 cars, also including MHEVs).

Sales to individuals largely in the lead
If we look at sales by channel, Individuals are still those who bought the most new cars in October since they alone account for 48% of sales. Businesses come in second with 31.8%, followed by executive vehicles and garages with 10.8%. And unsurprisingly, it is Dacia which remains the brand most purchased by individuals at 16%. Since the start of the year, it has been the Sandero which is the preferred model of individuals, very far ahead of the Renault Clio and Peugeot 208. But if we consider the entire PC market in October, Renault is in the lead with the Clio, in front of the 208 then the Sandero. The restyling of the Losange city car at the start of summer seems to have had a real boost effect on sales, since over the cumulative months of January to October (inclusive), the Clio moves back ahead of the 208 and sees its figures increase by 54.6% (80,329 cars) compared to 2022.

1.77 million sales expected by the end of the year
With 1,441,045 registrations between January and October, market projections for the year 2023 reach 1.77 million cars. Enough to get your head out of the water following a very dismal 2022 at only 1.53 million units. But with prices continuing to increase and the arrival next year of an ultra-severe penalty due to the finance bill, the smart one is the one who will be able to predict with certainty how the figures will evolve in the years to come. come !
