New cycle underpass near Großmarktstraße completed – natural design of the Liesingbach is in full swing
Vienna (OTS) – Construction work on the renaturation of the Liesingbach is currently in full swing. By 2027, the remaining 9.2 kilometers of the Liesingbach will be gradually tackled, creating valuable habitat for animals and plants. For the residents, the natural design provides attractive recreational space and a better quality of life. But that’s not all: As part of the design measures, the popular cycle route along the river is also being significantly improved in stages.
“We are using the current renaturation measures on the Liesing to make the cycle path more attractive. Optimized route planning and two underpasses will enable a continuous route on the left bank of the stream in the future! The gradual merging of the former cycle route to the left bank of the stream will create a direct connection along the Liesing in future – a significant improvement for everyone who explores the unique natural and leisure oasis on the Liesingbach by bike,” explains City Councilor Ulli Sima, who is responsible for water and mobility.
District manager Gerald Bischof: “I am pleased that the Liesingbach will continue to be designed in a natural way. The improvements for cyclists make the popular local recreation area even more attractive.”
First underpass under Großmarktstraße already finished
The current, 3 km long construction phase (component 1) of the renaturation work on the Liesing is between Großmarktstraße and Gutheil-Schoder-Gasse in Vienna-Liesing. The construction work there is in full swing. Previously, the cycle route in this section required crossing roads that were in part heavily frequented. With the construction of two bicycle underpasses, this will in future be located directly on the water and far away from traffic. The former is located under Großmarktstraße and is already fully accessible from now on. Another underpass will run under Laxenburger Strasse and is expected to open in February 2024. All measures to upgrade the cycle paths are taking place in coordination with the construction work, which is progressing in sections.
Outlook 2025: Optimization of the cycle route at Triester Straße
There are even more good prospects for all cyclists on Triester Straße: In the area of the Draschepark, a new cycle route is planned over the Altmannsdorfer Graben and under Triester Straße to the Inzersdorf-1-Steg. For this purpose, the current – too narrow – cycle path on the right bank of Triester Straße will be relocated to the left side of the Liesingbach and a new underpass will be built under Triester Straße. The new section will not be asphalted, but provided with light-colored gravel to avoid heat build-up. Work on this will begin in November 2024 and completion is planned for summer 2025.
Major project until 2027: Gradual renaturation of the Liesingbach
With a total of 30 km, the Liesingbach is the longest of the Wienerwald streams. Around half of the Liesingbach in Vienna’s urban area already has a near-natural design. By 2027, the remaining 9.2 kilometers of the Liesingbach will be gradually tackled as part of the major project “Integrative Flood Protection Liesingbach”. At the same time, flood protection and water quality are being improved. To improve water quality, Wien Kanal is building an additional rainwater channel in the stream bed.
The existing hard pavement is broken up piece by piece, the stones are crushed on site and then put back into the river bed. After that, the banks are flattened, natural sediment is brought in, stones and rhizomes are moved and willow cuttings are planted in the bank areas.
Small bays and shallow water areas are created in the stream – ideal habitats for young fish, insect larvae and other water-bound creatures. Around 200 new trees and many shrubs will be planted in the entire section, including maple, elm, linden, hawthorn and bird cherry.
For the residents of the Liesingbach, the project means an increase in green space by the water. New trees will provide shade, animals and plants will settle, the shore areas will be redesigned and thus improve the quality of life for walkers, runners and cyclists.
Excursion tip for the whole family: Information center BACHL
There has been an information center since June 2021 that provides information regarding the renaturation of the Liesingbach: The BACHL offers a permanent, partly interactive exhibition on the major project and is ideal for a visit by young and old!
