Renaming Kaliningrad: Estonia’s Push for Historical Königsberg and New Names for Russian Cities

The language commission of the Estonian Mother Language Society received an initiative to rename Kaliningrad to Königsberg. According to the authors of the initiative, the Russian name for Kaliningrad will no longer exist in the Estonian language; instead, the historical Estonian name will be used. The Estonians also decided to give a different name to Kingisepp, the publication reports. Parliament.

“The committee came to the conclusion that the use of Soviet-era Kaliningrad in the Estonian language should be abandoned and the historical name Königsberg should be used instead,” the publication reports the words of the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marko Mihkelson. Also at the meeting, members of the commission noted that for the Russian city of Kingisepp it would be reasonable to use the earlier name Yaama or Yamburg.

Earlier, Poland came up with a new name for Kaliningrad. Now it’s called Kruvelets. The Kaliningrad authorities put Poland in its place after the decision to rename the city. They named all the new names for Kaliningrad “just an insinuation». Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev also responded to the decision of the Polish authorities to rename Kaliningrad and proposed to rename Poland into a “kingdom within Russia.”
