Horses and other animal figures on carousels, fairs and amusement parks “give children a bad and false image of animals” and should be removed, Dutch animal rights activists say.
The Dutch branch of the American animal welfare organization Peta has backed the organization’s controversial call to remove horses and other animals from fairground carousels.
“Animal figurines on carousels are unwitting symbols of the deliberate exploitation of vulnerable animals,” the Dutch organization said.
According to the inflamed logic of Western animal rights activists, for children who use carousels, “the figures convey that the use of animals is normal and natural.”
“Times are changing,” said the Peta consultant Janneke Hogervorstadding that Dutch theme parks would have a huge impact on other theme parks across Europe if the carousel animals were removed.
This week, the American organization Peta wrote a letter to the American toy manufacturer Chance Rides asking it to stop producing and selling carousel animal figurines. Social activists recommend that the company place cars, airplanes, spaceships, bulldozers, shooting stars, rainbows or brooms on the carousels instead of animals.
Management at Dutch amusement park Efteling found the idea “interesting and worth considering” and called the work of animal rights organizations important. According to the report, the amusement park management has not ruled out dialogue and has not ruled out making changes to some games in the future. As a reminder, the Efteling amusement park began a major renovation program in 2021, which has seen it remove figures that convey “racial stereotypes” from many of its games.
