The christening process has begun for Vivian Uchechi Ogu, a fourteen-year-old Nigerian who was martyred for holiness like Saint Maria Goreti.

For sainthood, the process for the beatification and canonization of fourteen-year-old Vivian Uchechi Ogu from Umulem, Enyogu, who was shot dead on November 15, 2009 by gunmen for resisting a rape attempt, has begun.

With the completion of the process which started on October 14, Vivian will become the second Blessed of the Catholic Church in Nigeria following Cipriano Ewen Tansi who was beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 22, 1998.

Like Saint Maria Goretti, Vivian died by resisting the attempts of a group of bandits who came to abuse her and her sister by following the path of the saint.

All testify that it was precisely St. Maria Goretti that Vivian took as her model for her last catechism lesson following attending morning mass on Sunday, November 15, 2009, the very day of her death.

Witnesses also say that Vivian always urged her fellow students to imitate Saint Maria Goretti and never indulge in rape or any form of immorality.

The naming process began with the opening of the tomb because the reputation for martyrdom and holiness of Vivian, who had given much help to the poor and the helpless in her early age, was growing day by day and everywhere.
