(CNN) — Anthony Dominick Benedetto, American singer popularly known as Tony Bennett, died on Friday, his longtime publicist, Sylvia Weiner, confirmed to CNN. He was 96 years old.

The legendary singer, identified by the public for singing “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” had a long career in music.
Bennett wowed Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra, performed live on MTV, had a cartoon cameo on “The Simpsons” and recorded two albums of duets with Lady Gaga.

His stint as a singing waiter in a New York restaurant was just the beginning. Even then, at 15, Bennett knew that he had found his calling.

“I just decided that… I would love to be successful, and if I didn’t, I would be doing this for the rest of my life,” he told CNN’s Larry King in 1998. “I loved it.”

In 2021, six months following Bennett and his family revealed that he suffers from Alzheimer’s, Bennett sang alongside Lady Gaga to crowds in a two-concert series in early August billed as his last performance in New York.

In addition to her signature song, Bennett performed tracks like “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” and duets with Lady Gaga, including “Love For Sale” and “Anything Goes.”
